On-demand eCPD for the UK dentist

Welcome!

This on-demand, video course provides you with Dental Sleep Medicine training and business development.

It’s for dentists wishing to further their knowledge and understanding about treating patients who snore and/or may have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

This UK specific course offers you:

  • Knowledge of how to screen patients for OSA (all important)
  • Ongoing membership of our private FaceBook support group (with community pharmacists who may refer patients to you)
  • Listing on the Snorer Pharmacy® database for community pharmacists to find you

Why do this course?

There is little, if any, evidence to support OTC ‘snoring’ products place on the market. But within the context of concurrent cardiovascular, obesity and T2DM epidemics, it might perhaps be forgivable to consider ‘snoring’, an irrelevance.

However, when you appreciate that metabolic syndrome is exacerbated by obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)1 – a symptom of which is snoring, you may wish to reconsider.

Indeed, snoring without OSA is far from benign.

The social consequences alone:

  • Sleeping apart
  • Relationship disharmony
  • No holidays because of enforced sleep disruption when sharing a hotel room
  • Fear of travelling due to concern over falling asleep during long journeys on public transport and the consequent ridicule and embarrassment

mean snorers deserve valid help.

Which is where YOU come in!

On-demand training

The on-demand training course consists of 9 chapters. Each made up of multiple short (typically 3-5 minute videos). Sign up and start immediately.

The peer-reviewed curriculum has been created in line with the content requirements set out in the Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology’s Standard of Care document for Mandibular Repositioning Devices* and created in line with the requirements of the NHS Information Standard.

You will learn How to screen patients and identify those who are safe to treat without a prior medical diagnosis and recognise those who need further investigation.

You are empowered to act in the U.K. This is a unique situation in the World.

Upon completion, all students with a GDC number, will be able to download a digital certificate of completion.

Hello! I train healthcare professionals how to help their patients stop snoring; sleep and breathe at the same time. Many of my customers find their work so rewarding they limit their practice to it.

I began in the sleep business in 1994, yet I’m NOT a pharmacist, dentist nor a doctor. I am however, an instructor, inventor, author, market access business consultant, car enthusiast, amateur cook and proud Dad to 2 fab kids. Someone who gives a damn.

I used to make oral appliances for diagnosed sleep apnoea patients when I set up Zacher Sleep Appliances in the 1990s. Followed by a few years in the corporate world (quite enough).

Today, I am CEO of the British Society of Pharmacy Sleep Services (a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation) and a TaskForce member of an independent advisory group to the All Party Parliamentary Group for Sleep.

There’s even more about me here and you can find me on LinkedIn.

Complete course (9 chapters) Aims, Learning Objectives, Educational Outcomes for Verifiable CPD

Aims

  • To enlighten GDPs about sleep related breathing disorders and the vital role they may play enhancing the lives of their patients’ sleep and breathing.
  • To educate General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) to safely provide anti-snoring devices.
  • To empower GDPs to act upon the education they have undertaken.

Learning Objectives

This online program (Academy) is divided into 9 individual chapters, each with a short assessment and explanation. The final examination has a minimum pass mark (80%) to satisfy verifiable CPD requirements and ensure GDPs are educated sleep professionals.

The specific learning objectives are:

  • Understand the relationship between snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and identify the signs and symptoms.
  • Understand how to screen, assess, treat and monitor snoring patients.
  • Understand the role of the dentist concerning sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD).
  • Understand the basic indications/contraindications for mandibular repositioning devices (MRDs).
  • Understand how to record a protrusive bite registration.

With an estimated 40% of the UK population reporting regular snoring3 this is a sizeable problem.

Snoring is commonly trivialised and sales of OTC snore ‘cures’ that encourage the unwary to self-diagnose and self-treat (in order to profit from their misery) commonplace.

Yet the snorer with untreated sleep apnoea can expect to:

Die 20 up to years sooner4

Finn L, Young T. Sleep Disordered Breathing and Mortality: Eighteen-Year Follow-up of the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort. Year Pulm Dis. 2009;2009:291-292. doi:10.1016/s8756-3452(08)791813

than the average lifespan, independent of age, sex and BMI, which is disappointing when diagnosis and treatment is available from the NHS, that could significantly extend their healthy life.

Sleep apnoea is more common than you may think, perhaps as many as one in ten middle-aged men have it.6 Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS) patients who receive treatment will be more productive, more motivated and live longer, healthier lives.

Our Unique Offering:

Consists of three integrated elements
to direct primary snorers to sleep-trained dentists

Snorer.com ranks on Google’s first page for commonly searched for snoring keywords and phrases.

We direct snorers and their long-suffering partners to consult a pharmacist (or GP).

PHARMACY

We train pharmacists (and their teams) to direct primary snorers to sleep-trained dentists.

Our turn-key online service for Community Pharmacists helps pharmacists signpost snorers appropriately.

Our proprietary Snorer.me Signposting™ software is a UKCA marked Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) utilising industry recognised pre-treatment screening tools.

We have no vested interest in the outcome of signposting.

Our inexpensive snoring course for UK dentists is divided into chapters, each with a short assessment.

The final examination has a minimum pass mark of 80% to satisfy planned learning CPD requirements and to ensure dentists are educated sleep professionals.

We do NOT make/sell treatment devices

ABOUT US

Our Story

Adrian Zacher established Snorer.com after 18 years in the sleep industry, variously working in oral surgery, manufacturing custom-made mandibular repositioning devices, and then working for ResMed.

With Snorer.com Adrian was initially satisfied to just disrupt the pseudo-scientific marketing, commonly used to exploit naive snorers and their long-suffering partners.

This grew into creation of the Snorer Pharmacy® signposting software and comprehension that pharmacists are the appropriate professional to deliver it.

Snorer.com is proudly independent of any sleep business and NOT part of an affiliate scheme.

What’s all this about Pharmacists?

Pharmacists signpost snorers to dentists.

An abundance of Over-The-Counter (OTC) products for snoring exist.

However, they generally have little, if any, objective evidence of effect.

We created our signposting tool (CDSS) to develop the primary care network, and connect snorers to pharmacists – and on to sleep-trained dentists, so they may accelerate sufferers to valid, evidence-based and effective treatment.

Adrian Zacher

In our Snorer.com blog, we independently review ‘cures’ for snoring and sleep apnoea.

Signposting ‘snorers’ to appropriate care pathways is a key role for the pharmacist 7.

Current NICE Guidelines7 state that mandibular advancement devices (custom-made, prescription ‘mouthguards’) are first-line therapy for snoring and mild OSA, when the snorer is not drowsy during their normal awake time (hypersomnolent) and has no relevant comorbidities.

Such patients should be directed to a sleep-trained dentist, for the dentist to determine the patient’s suitability for a custom-made, prescription mandibular advancement device.

Our work with pharmacists directs primary snorers to you.

Particularly useful when a GP referral would be unlikely to result in a secondary care referral and serve only to:

  • 1

    Unnecessarily consume GP clinical time

  • 2

    Waste the snorer’s time

  • 3

And in the worse case scenario, unnecessarily consume diagnostic capacity in secondary care
